This interactive session will engage participants in a taboo topic by defining modern sex work and outlining best practices to providing equitable, ethical care for this population. By examining the oppression, empowerment, and polymorphous paradigm models, a theoretical orientation will be established as a lens to view the sex work industry. Participants will learn about relevant legislation, the issues that impact sex workers, and advocacy opportunities. Learning Objectives

  • 1. By addressing the challenges of meeting the health needs of sex workers, clinicians can play a role in reducing trafficking and increasing the wellness of their clients.
  • 2. The first section will primarily focus on defining sex work, differentiating it from human trafficking, and dispelling myths Participants will also learn about the marginalization of this community.
  • 3. The second section will establish a theoretical framework by outlining the oppression, empowerment, and polymorphous paradigm models. Participants will also learn about relevant legislation and legal perspectives that impact sex work.
  • 4. The final section will focus on best practices for providing equitable and ethical clinical care for this population. Participants will learn more about counseling implications, the importance of a trauma-informed approach, and advocacy opportunities.
