Given the societal taboos against discussing the positive aspects of sexuality especially when it centers older womyn, this training will offer a rare opportunity to apply current research and resources to clinical and administrative practice with older adults. The focus of this highly-engaging session is improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding the impacts of aging on the sexuality of womyn, the sexual challenges of chronic illness, and the possibility of pleasure for older womyn with an emphasis on application to working with older womyn in same-sex relationships. Learning Objectives

1. Describe the meaning of ageism as it relates to the sexual expression of older womyn

Learning Levels

Intermediate – Intermediate level programming builds upon the learners’ foundational knowledge in a content area. Programming at the intermediate level includes more depth than that which is associated with a beginning level program. The program of instruction can build on the learners’ familiarity with the literature and/or experience. Programming can help the learner understand applications and limitations of theories and applied skill sets. Intermediate level programming may also focus on an integration of skills. This programming could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

About the speakers

Jane Fleishman, PhD, MEd, MS (she/her)

Jane Fleishman, PhD, MEd, MS, is an award-winning writer, educator, sexuality researcher, and AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator. She earned her M.Ed. and Ph.D. at Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies. She is on a mission to promote the sexual wellness in older adults and doesn’t shy away from the difficult and complex realities of making that happen. She focuses on the contradictions around ageism, sexism, racism, ableism, and all the other ways that people get placed on the margins. Her curious nature led to her latest accomplishment, The Stonewall Generation: LGBTQ Elders on Sex, Activism, and Aging which recently won a coveted Nautilus Book Award. She co-hosts a regular podcast on sex about sex in the second half of life, which she calls Our Better Half. And she recently completed a popular TEDx talk, Is It OK for Grandma to Have Sex? James Wadley, PhD is Director of the Sex therapy Program at Council for Relationships and Chair of the Counseling and Human Services department at Lincoln University. As a scholar-practitioner, he is a licensed professional counselor and maintains a private practice in the States of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dr. Wadley is the founding editor of the scholarly, interdisciplinary journal, the Journal of Black Sexuality and Relationships (University of Nebraska Press). He is also the founder and Principal of the Association of Black Sexologists and Clinicians and his professional background in human sexuality education, educational leadership, and program development has enabled him to galvanize scholars and practitioners in the field of sexology across the world.
