That’s About White: Integrating Anti-racism within Mental Health Treatment

For decades, people of color with mental health disorders have been more marginalized than their white counterparts, living in the shadows, reticent to seek help and less likely to receive specialized treatment or prescribed medications. Disproportionately sent to jail or prison for addiction-related crimes 7 times more than their white counterparts, minorities are reticent to enter treatment due to fear of punitive responses and moral judgements. About the speakers

Sherrá Watkins, Ph.D.

CEO, Sister W.E.L.L.S

Dr. Sherrá Watkins (she/her/hers) is the Director of Wellness Counseling and Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. A leader in the mental health and substance use field, her passion is to transform systems that perpetuate decreased access and utilization of counseling services to BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color). Watkins’ research focuses on decreasing the stigma of mental health and substance use disorders, chronic pain and chronic diseases among African Americans, and the intersection of racism and racial bias within chronic pain and substance use treatment. She serves on the NAADAC Critical Issues in the Black Community Committee and as the Co-Chair for the Social Justice Task Force within AUC.

Shawnté Elbert, EdD

Associate Vice President for Health and Well-being, Ohio State University

Dr. Shawnté Elbert is the Associate VP OF Health & Well-being at The Ohio State University. She is an accomplished leader and student affairs administrator with a depth and breadth of experience in college student health and wellness, including harm reduction, prevention and risk management. Dr. Elbert has a strong background in policy review and development, health and wellness compliance and public health theory and practice. A strong advocate for historically marginalized and minoritized students, Dr. Elbert has vast expertise in the areas of public health administration and education, wellness, peer education and leadership development. She serves on the Board of Directors for American College Health Association and as an Aspire Mentor. In NASPA she is the co-chair for the Wellness and Health Promotion Knowledge Community, Peer Education Advisory Board and the Fraternity & Sorority Life Health, Safety, and Well-being Working Group.
