We live in a time of unprecedented, rapid and unpredictable change. The on-going global pandemic has resulted in a significant disruption to routines of daily living, restricted access to resources, and led to the loss of many lives. Systemic approaches that focus on the present can provide a way for those who work with families to better understand the complicated set of challenges they face. By developing an understanding of individuals and families within societal and cultural contexts, application of systemic interventions can be utilized as a way to decrease stress and improve levels of functioning. This framework provides an accessible way to provide support and facilitate change in a time where it is hard to know where to begin.

  • Identify the complex set of factors impacting individuals and families in this particular moment in time.
  • Demonstrate how intersectionality impacts families’ experiences and can be used in effective treatment planning.
  • Apply systemic concepts in order to understand and support individuals and families from several perspectives.
  • Discuss how mindfulness-based approaches can assist families as well as those who work with them to navigate the challenges associated with our current societal climates.
  • Develop strategies to help families strengthen coping strategies in order to reduce stress and improve quality of life.
