Eating Disorders in the LGBTQIA+ Community

In the United States, more than 13 million adults identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual and a further 1.4 million people identify as transgender. Time will be set aside to learn and relearn terms often expressed as meaningful by persons who identify as LGBTQIA+, to encounter common themes amid specific populations within LGBTQIA+ communities, and to reflect on the experience of encountering dynamic (if not elusive) nomenclature in a clinical world built for categorization.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the intersection of eating disorders with sexuality and gender identity, specifically in regard to LGBTQ+ populations. Participants will encounter the ‘minority stress theory’ (alongside correlate terms ‘distal stress’ and ‘proximal stress’) as one rubric for considering the complex, compounded challenges frequently experienced by persons from LGBTQIA+ populations and other oppressed populations.
  • Explain common eating-related behaviors in which a person from the LGBTQIA+ population might engage in initial adaptive coping mechanisms that carry significant point-of-entry risk for eating disorders pathology.
  • Recite at least one example of intra-community bias related to body, weight, shape, size, or appearance in a sexual minority population, together with (2) a basic historical framework of that bias.
