Dr. Tong is an Educational Psychologist in Hong Kong. She mainly works in the preschool settings. In recent years, she has been working to enhance public awareness of the importance of social-emotional development among preschool kids.
Dr. Tong is leading a funded project focusing on training parents of lower SES to become their kid's emotion coach. Dr. Tong and her colleagues modified John Gottman’s emotion coaching model by further incorporating mindfulness-based strategies. Parents generally found the program to be effective in attending to needs of their own as well as their kids.
In addition, Dr. Tong is also developing a mindfulness-based social-emotional learning curriculum for preschools and had conducted a research study to validate the effectiveness of the curriculum. Initial findings showed that the curriculum was effective in enhancing preschooler's emotion regulation skills.

The development of social and emotional competence in the preschool years contributes to academic success and healthy functioning in later years; nevertheless, most education in the East focuses on academic success while undermining the holistic development of children.
