Practical Play Therapy Applications of the Polyvagal Theory (Africa)

Date: July 09 - 10, 2022

This training has been customized with cultural considerations for mental health clinicians in Kenya, Africa. For this reason, registration is limited to African residents to support applicability and to maximize space available.

In this experiential workshop, trainees will explore practical Play Therapy applications of the Polyvagal Theory through the lens of the Therapeutic Powers of Play Therapy. Trainees will learn the basics of Polyvagal theory, including the neuroscience of emotions, communication, the social engagement system, and the role of Play Therapy in the regulation of the nervous system.

Play Therapy application of the Polyvagal Theory can help support emotional wellness and substantially impact treatment effectiveness with respect to treating children, and moreover provide a deeper understanding of the brain/body connection. This is particularly important when considering the unique ways the autonomic nervous system impacts children's capacity to manage stress, navigate relationships, and regulate emotional states. This workshop will serve as a deep dive into foundational concepts and best practices of Polyvegal theory and Play Therapy, particularly when working with children and adolescents. In addition to lecture and video demonstrations, attendees will have the chance to practice techniques in breakout rooms and engage in discussion in order strengthen understanding.

For a comprehensive, thorough understanding of the Polyvagal Theory, Jackie Flynn recommends learning about the Polyvagal Theory directly from Dr. Stephen Porges and Deb Dana, as this training is primarily focused on practical Play Therapy applications of the Polyvagal theory.
