"Is Legal Always Ethical?" Anti-Racist Social Work in the Context of Capitalist Systems

How do we resist oppression and work towards liberation for ourselves and the people we serve? As social service providers, this question can feel like a conundrum as we acknowledge the influence of white supremacy culture on organizations and institutions that we work with and within, as well as the ongoing harm that is perpetrated by institutional racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and heterosexism.

Live Interactive Webinar

COURSE CONTENT:

This two-session virtual conference will focus on practical and theoretical ways we work towards changes in organizations and public policies while facing the reality of the capitalist systems we live and work in.

  • Session 1 will focus on organizational change, moving from a white supremacy cultural frame as the basis of service design and delivery, to one which is anti-racist and advances principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Session 2 will focus on the child welfare system and the ways in which it serves as a family policing/regulation system. Participants will learn about the history of America’s child welfare system and how it interacts with race, class, social policy, and other legal systems.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

        • Increase awareness of the role and influence of white supremacy culture in the design of programs and organizations that serve marginalized and underprivileged communities and the challenges that social workers experience within capitalist systems;
        • Understand the differences between child welfare system reform and child welfare system abolition and apply these frameworks to current policy issues, such as blind removal, mandated reporting, resource family approval, and prevention and reunification services;
        • Provide an opportunity to examine strategies to transform individual practice and social work institutions to implement racial justice;
        • Gain practical knowledge as social workers about how to make changes within oppressive systems.
