Intimate Harm: Addressing Abusive Behavior Toward Intimates in Therapeutic Settings

This workshop is an opportunity for clinicians to deepen their understanding of the roots of harmful or violent behavior toward intimate partners and other family members, and to further develop strategies for productive screening and engagement of both clients who are being harmed as well as those doing the harming.

The workshop will address contemporary issues and practices in the context of working with families that have experienced intimate violence. Specific recommendations for clinical practice and best practice guidelines for therapeutic intervention will be included.

  • 1. Describe the role of biology and socialization in the development of patterns of harmful behavior.
  • 2. Identify differences among people who act harmfully toward their intimates.
  • 3. Recognize the internal process of someone who discloses harmful or abusive behavior.
  • 4. Describe appropriate assessment techniques to screen for abuse, and strategies for responding to disclosures of intimate partner abuse.
  • 5. Identify key differences in therapeutic work with adults who engage in harmful behaviors and adults who are being harmed.
