Screening, diagnosis and assessment of selective mutism (SM) are hampered by a lack of validated measures. The assessment of the individual speaking pattern of a child with SM can be a very time-consuming procedure. The Frankfurt Scale of Selective Mutism (FSSM) is a novel, parent-rated measure including both diagnostic and severity scales that can be used for both clinical and research purposes.
