EMDR Refresh: Approaches for Complex Clients

The course will provide a review of EMDR Therapy, the 3-pronged approach, and the 8-phase protocol. Clarifying and strengthening the use of the standard protocol through lecture and videos will be utilized. We will expand how to use EMDR and focus on working with clients who have a complicated history and present with multiple symptoms. Emphasis will be on how to develop a treatment focus and map out appropriate targets. There is no known commercial support nor conflict of interest for this program. Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least one clinical situation where you would modify the EMDR standard protocol in order to meet the needs of your clients.
  • Define “Window of Tolerance” and explain its importance in the processing phases of EMDR therapy.
  • Identify challenges unique to dissociative clients and list at least two strategies for aiding dissociative clients in processing memories.
  • Describe common barriers clients encounter in identifying relevant memories for reprocessing, and list at least two strategies for overcoming those barriers in phase 2 of EMDR therapy.

10:00am-11:30am – Introduction to presenter and some common problems facing clinicians.  Review of EMDR therapy model, the brain and the nature of memory and AIP.  General review of eight phases.

11:30am–11:45am Break

11:45am-1:00pm – In depth review of history taking and preparation phases. Client videos on stabilization and target sequence planning.

1:00pm -1:30pm – Lunch

1:30pm - 3:15pm – In depth review of phases three and four. Client videos on cognitive interweave and window of tolerance.

3:15pm – 3:30pm – Break

3:30 - 5:00 – Review of phases five through eight. Questions and debrief
