Companioning Children and Teens when a Loved One is Dying
In this presentation we will provide a brief overview of child life services in adult hospital settings. We will spend some time discuss current research on anticipatory grief in children and their need for support as well as identify and discuss the physical, emotional, and behavioral responses children and teenagers may exhibit when experiencing anticipatory grief by sharing brief examples from our work with children in the hospital setting. We will discuss the benefits of children and teenagers visiting a loved one at the end of life in both the hospital setting and home hospice. We will describe the struggles many parents face in allowing their children this opportunity and how we advocate for children to have a choice to visit. We will also discuss COVID-19 impact on child life work including virtual visits and connection activities.
