Teen social media use is an increasingly important topic for families, clinicians, and policymakers. First, this workshop will review research on social media use and teen mental health, with a focus on cyberbullying, sleep and suicide risk. Second, we will discuss current guidelines for engaging in healthy social media use for teens and their families. Finally, we will engage in interactive discussions and role plays for participants to learn and apply skills to discussing social media use with teens and families. About the speakers

Jessica L. Hamilton, PhD

Jessica L. Hamilton, PhD

Dr. Jessica L. Hamilton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and Director of The Hamilton Lab. Her research examines the interplay between social media use, sleep, and mental health among adolescents. Her research harnesses innovative technological methods (e.g., smartphone sensing, ecological momentary assessment, and actigraphy) to examine these relationships in real time. She also conducts focus groups and works with adolescents on her youth advisory board to ensure her research is informed by and accessible to young people. Dr. Hamilton’s research aims to inform the development of equitable suicide prevention programs and scalable interventions to promote adolescent mental health and well-being.
Candice L. Biernesser, PhD

Candice L. Biernesser, PhD

Candice Biernesser is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, the Director of Digital Interventions, and the Director of the SPARC-Life research center, at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research aims to examine and prevent suicide risk associated with social media experiences, namely cyberbullying, among adolescents from communities underserved within traditional mental healthcare.
