Beyond the Basics: Internal Family Systems and Sandtray Play Therapy Intensive

Are you ready to take a deep dive into utilizing parts work in the sand?

This sandtray play therapy intensive will go beyond the basics and take a deep dive into utilizing parts work within the sandtray by incorporating the Internal Family Systems model. We will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of a client’s protective system and how trauma can impact behaviors and beliefs about self. Along with IFS participants will focus on advanced considerations related to neurobiology, somatic processing, and the polyvagal theory.

Participants refine and integrate therapeutic skills through hands-on practice with workshop partners. Each participant has an individual sandtray for practice exercises and for creating individual sandtray worlds.

1.  Discuss the neurobiological processes related to sandtray and play therapy. 

2. Describe observable somatic indicators of fight, flight, & freeze during sandtray and play therapy sessions. 

3. Discuss and explore 6 ethical principles of play therapy. 

4. List 5 indicators that trauma is significantly affecting a person’s life.

5. Identify at least 5 ways in which play therapy supports trauma recovery.

6. Discuss the primary components of the Internal Family Systems Theory. 

7. Consider the benefits of using sandtray play therapy with trauma survivors concerning the therapeutic relationship.

8. Discuss standard practices and protocols of sandtray and how to integrate into play therapy with all ages

9. Apply Internal family systems and sandtray play therapy skills to processing sand worlds created by clients of all ages

10. Apply knowledge of play therapy reflective skills and theme analysis to sandtray case studies

11.  Demonstrate increased proficiency with facilitating the IFS process

12. Differentiate the core aspects of the internal system including managers, firefighters and exiles.

13. Assess the 8C’s of self-leadership

14. Apply the tenets of interpersonal neurobiology in a play therapy setting.

15. Demonstrate the effect of trauma on the brain and how this affects sandtray therapy.

16. Apply the Poly-vagal theory and how this relates to play and sandtray therapy.

17. Demonstrate to interpret sandtrays based within brain science.
