Liza Bonin, PhD

Dr. Liza Bonin is a clinical psychologist at Texas Children’s Hospital who specializes in pediatric OCD and health anxiety. She is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and has served as Training Director for the Psychology Division’s APA-accredited internship program, the Texas Children’s Hospital Psychology Internship, for the past 15 + years. Prior to her faculty role at Baylor, Dr. Bonin completed a child/adolescent psychology fellowship at Texas Children’s, her doctoral internship training through Baylor’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and her post-graduate education at the University of Texas at Austin.

Over the course of her tenure at Baylor and Texas Children’s, Dr. Bonin has been actively involved in program development as well as a champion for quality and quality improvement.

Heidi Putney, Ph.D. earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University in 2020 after spending a year in Washington, D.C. working with the National Institute of Justice and then a year near Seattle, WA working in a forensic psychiatric inpatient hospital. After completing her forensic post-doctoral residency at UMass Medical School in 2021, Dr. Putney became licensed in Massachusetts where she currently works as a forensic evaluator in the Boston courts, runs training seminars for the UMass internship, and completes various types of forensic evaluations in the community privately. She also maintains research in the areas of forensic public policy, professional development, and diversity training. In July of 2022, Dr. Putney will be joining the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School as an assistant professor conducting forensic evaluations.

Leah E. Squires, Ph.D (she/her) has served as Director of Psychology Training Programs at the Washington DC VA Medical Center since Spring 2019. An avid gardener, Dr. Squires describes herself as “a nurturer of psychologists in training”. Prior to serving in this role, Dr. Squires served as the National Coordinator of the Liver/HIV Psychology Postdoctoral Training Program for the VA office of HIV, Hepatitis and Related Conditions. Dr. Squires maintains a small clinical footprint providing integrated HIV mental health care within the DC VA Infectious Diseases Clinic. Dr. Squires completed both internship and fellowship at the DC VAMC and is a graduate of Boston University.

Dr. Shona Vas received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Loyola University Chicago and is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. As Director of Clinical Psychology Training, she leads her department’s psychology practicum, internship, and postdoctoral fellowship programs. Dr. Vas is board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology and the Director of the Cognitive-Behavior Therapy program where she provides clinical services, training, and supervision. Dr. Vas’ research interests include professional issues in health service psychology training, competency-based supervision, and dissemination and assessment of the delivery of evidence-based care.

Amy L. Reynolds is a Professor in the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo. Dr. Reynolds received her master’s degree in student personnel work and her doctorate in counseling psychology from Ohio State University and has been working in higher education as both a staff psychologist and professor for over 30 years. Her work as a scholar, teacher, and consultant focuses on multicultural competence in counseling and student affairs as well as college mental health issues. She has published over 40 journal articles and 20 book chapters and made over 90 juried and invited presentations at regional/national conferences and campuses. She is one of the co-authors for Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs: Advancing Social Justice and Inclusion (2019) and Creating Multicultural Change on Campus (2014) and the sole author of Helping college students: Developing essential skills for student affairs practice (2009).

The primary focus of her scholarship is on multicultural competence and training in counseling psychology and higher education. Specifically, her research has centered on expanding the multicultural knowledge base through scholarship on race, racial identity, and racism-related stress, queer and trans identity, acculturation, and other multicultural issues, exploring training and curricular applications in counseling psychology, and increasing understanding of multicultural change efforts in higher education. Additionally, her scholarship has explored college student mental health issues, including the impact of politics on mental health and counselor training.

Dr. Reynolds is the President of the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17) of the American Psychological Association. In recognition of her contribution to the fields of counseling psychology and student affairs, she was awarded the Lifetime Commitment to Education and Training Award from the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP) in 2020, named a Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP) in 2014 and chosen as a Diamond Honoree of the ACPA-College Student Educators International in 2017.

Dr. Angela Kuemmel, Ph.D., ABPP (Rp) is a Rehabilitation Psychologist in Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders, the Director of Predoctoral Psychology Training and the chair of the Psychology Service Diversity Committee at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC. She completed her predoctoral internship at VA Boston/Harvard Medical School and her postdoctoral fellowship in rehabilitation psychology at the James A. Haley VA in Tampa, FL. Dr. Kuemmel is currently serving on APA’s Council of Representatives and chairing APPIC’s Diversity Committee. In her ten years at the Cleveland VAMC, Dr. Kuemmel has pioneered a variety of interdisciplinary programs for veterans with SCI/D, including telehealth chronic pain management and sexuality programs, a community education project on wheelchair accessibility, and an annual birthday party celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act. She is also very passionate about, actively pursues research and is published in supervision of students with disabilities. She was honored with ABPP’s Early Career Diversity Award, a Presidential Citation from APA President Kaslow, the 2018 Division 22 Rehabilitation Psychology Early Career Practice Award and the 2021 ASCIP PSWC Clinical Performance Award. In her free time, Dr. Kuemmel enjoys staying up late to read the latest Jodi Picoult novel and cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Cavaliers and Guardians!

Anna Hayburn, PsyD is a clinical psychologist for the Neuromuscular Center within the Neurological Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. She specializes in behavioral health interventions to support populations including autonomic disorders, motor neuron disease such as ALS, and neuromuscular chronic pain. She also specializes in supporting LGBTQ+ populations. She earned her Psy.D. in clinical psychology at Wright State University and recently completed a pain psychology fellowship and her health psychology internship at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, where she completed the postdoctoral research project she will be presenting on today. Her research interests involve diversity considerations within training and health disparities. She appreciates serving on the Cleveland Clinic's Psychiatry Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Curriculum Committee and LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, as well as the Ohio Psychological Association LGBT and Early Career Psychologist committees, and prior involvement in various VA diversity committees throughout her training including the Cleveland VA's Psychology Service Diversity Committee.

Jennifer Crawford, PhD is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist in the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Crawford received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of New Mexico in 2016. She completed pre-doctoral internship at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, Virginia; and then completed the Advanced Fellowship in Women’s Health with a focus on interpersonal trauma and women’s behavioral health at VA San Diego and University of California, San Diego. She collaborates on research with the Pregnancy-Related Care Research Network at the University of Washington and with VA women’s health researchers at UMASS and in Albuquerque. Her main interests are in women’s behavioral health, trauma/PTSD, and perinatal mental health, with current health services research focused on improving behavioral health care access for underserved women in women’s specialty medical settings. Dr. Crawford supervises psychology interns and fellows in women’s behavioral health; and mentors fellows and psychiatry residents on related research.

Dr. Reyes is a Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine and a clinical psychologist with specialty in pediatric psychology, cross-cultural medicine, health disparities and integrated primary care. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University and completed Internship at the Baylor College of Medicine. She is a founding faculty of the Florida State University College of Medicine (which opened in 2001 with the mission to train physicians to work with underserved populations). Dr. Reyes has over 30 years experience in medical education and clinical health psychology education. She is currently the Regional Director for the College of Medicine in Southwest Florida where she oversees the educational and research programs at the Isabel Collier Read Medical Campus . She is the Director of the Clinical Health Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and the Director of the FSU Center for Child Stress & Health, a partner in the SAMHSA funded National Child Traumatic Stress Network. As an expert in Latino mental health, specifically the impact of immigration and acculturation on family functioning and children’s psychological development, she has developed a clinical research site where patients can be provided culturally and linguistically appropriate care. She has worked with immigrant children and migrant farm working families for over 20 years. She and her team develop culturally and linguistically appropriate resources to work with Latino children and families in integrated primary care and provide national trainings for healthcare providers and early childhood educators around issues of trauma. She has received over $8 million for her Center from National, State and Foundation funding for workforce development and applied research around issues of trauma in primary care.

MARIELLA M. SELF, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, where she serves as a pediatric psychologist, as the Training Director of the Pediatric/Clinical Child Psychology Fellowship Program, and as a Co-Investigator in an NIH-funded research lab pertaining to pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders. She currently serves as a member of the APPIC Postdoctoral Committee and also as Chair of the Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology Training Council.

Dr. Self earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Texas A&M University and completed internship and fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital. She is Board-certified in Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology.

Her interests are wide-ranging but broadly described include facilitation of adaptation to and effective management of pediatric medical conditions, pediatric bioethics, and topics related to education and training across the psychology pipeline.

Danielle Rynczak, JD, PsyD, ABPP, is an attorney and a licensed clinical psychologist and has been board certified in forensic psychology since 2016. She is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in the Law and Psychiatry Program, where she is actively involved in diversity, equity, and belonging curriculum development (as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging for the APA accredited internship program); legal training (as the Director of Legal Education and Training); conducting forensic evaluations; and teaching and mentoring interns and fellows. Dr. Rynczak also holds teaching positions in the medical and law schools at Northwestern University. Emily Treichler, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor at the VA San Diego Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), and the University of California, San Diego Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Treichler holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2016). She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Maryland Medical Center-VA Maryland Health Care System in the UM Serious Mental Illness track, and postdoctoral fellowships in psychosis and healthy aging at the VA San Diego MIRECC and University of California, San Diego. Her main interests are in serious mental illnesses; identification and implementation of evidence-based, person-centered therapies and programs; social justice and dismantling of coercive power structures in mental health services; and cultivation of personal recovery through empowerment, pursuit of meaning, and belonging within chosen communities.

Tanya Brown, PhD

Tanya Brown is a licensed psychologist based in Los Angeles, CA. She has worked at UCLA Counseling Psychological Services (CAPS) since 2009, initially as a post-doctoral fellow and currently as the Training Director. Throughout her career, she has actively worked in community and clinical settings to identify needs, tailor treatment and programming for underrepresented groups, and coordinate clinical supervision and training for psychology and social work graduate and postgraduate fellows.
Prior to her current role, she held various training positions: as an internship coordinator for a diversity pipeline program in program evaluation (American Evaluation Association Graduate Education Diversity Internship Program); as the counseling center liaison to campus residential life, she taught and provided consultation on peer counseling skills; and most recently as the assistant training director of the training program at UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). In all of these positions, she seized opportunities to integrate collaborative learning and critical reflection about diversity.

Academically, she has published on topics including culturally responsive program evaluation, transformative learning processes and community engagement. In addition to providing clinical supervision, she teaches program development and program evaluation in the Masters of Student Affairs program at UCLA. She has also presented on ways to address multicultural issues in academic, clinical, and work settings. She actively participates in the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA), initially as a diversity scholar in 2018, member of the steering committee on diversity and currently as a board member.
Her areas of clinical expertise include: acculturative stress, immigration transition and racial trauma, ADHD assessment and behavioral interventions, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, sexual assault, and coping with stress and major life transitions.

Prior to this role, Dr. Jackson served as Director of Psychology Training for 7 years and the Director of Education and Training for 3 years within the Dallas VA’s Mental Health Service She is Chair-Elect of the VA Psychology Training Council’s Executive Committee.

Matt is the Director of Training at CAPS, where he oversees doctoral interns in an American Psychological Association accredited program and doctoral level practicum students. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Nova Southeastern University 's Center for Psychological Studies, completed his internship at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. and his postdoctoral residency at the Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, FL. He is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology. His areas of interest include eating issues and body image concerns, relational difficulties and clinical training. He has taught courses on body image and eating concerns, conceptual foundations in psychology, and interviewing techniques for the past 20 years. Matt focuses on training issues in psychology and advocacy for training in mental health access through leadership activities, as Past President of the Broward County Psychological Association and The Association of Counseling Center Training Agenceis (ACCTA). Matt is the author of a book, Choosing a Psychotherapist: A Guide to Navigating the Mental Health Maze. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, engaged in singing/composing activities, or various outdoor and athletic pursuits.

Ellie is a staff psychologist at UCLA CAPS, where she has cultivated her clinical interests and built on her
training and research on the mental health issues of undocumented and first-generation college students. She is a member of the UCLA CAPS Training Program as a clinical supervisor and facilitator of the Multicultural Counseling Psychology Seminar for pre-doctoral interns. As the co-chair of California Psychological Association's Immigration Task Force, she helped develop clinical recommendations for working with undocumented immigrant clients. Ellie’s approach is integrative and informed by feminist, multicultural, community, and humanistic psychology.

Dr. Lindsay Smart is an Associate Professor and Clinical Psychologist in the UNM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Smart is an Associate Vice Chancellor for Leadership and Faculty Equity & Inclusion in the UNM HSC Office for Diversity Equity, and Inclusion. She is also the Training Director for the Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Dr. Smart received her B.A. degree in Psychology at the University of Portland and her M.A and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. During her time as a graduate student at the University of Denver, Dr. Smart was an American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program Fellow. Dr. Smart completed her Pre-Doctoral Clinical Psychology internship at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine at the Children’s Psychiatric Center and her post-doctoral training was completed with the UNM Division of Community Behavioral Health. Currently, Dr. Smart is involved in initiatives that contribute to the promotion of diversity among faculty, students, and staff within the UNM Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Michelle Moore is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She has served as the Training Director for the clinical psychology internship program since 2017 and was appointed as the Section Chief for Psychology within the Department of Psychiatry earlier this year. Dr. Moore is on her third year as a board member for the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and serves as a co-chair for the Faculty Development Committee within the LSU School of Medicine. In addition to supervising the work of psychology interns, Dr. Moore supervises psychiatry residents in psychotherapy and mentors medical students on research.

Amy K. Silberbogen, Ph.D., ABPP is the Assistant Chief of Psychology and Director of the VA Boston Psychology Postdoctoral Training Program at VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS). She is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. She earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and completed her internship and postdoctoral training at VABHS. She holds board certification in Clinical Health Psychology and provides clinical services within the Behavioral Medicine Program at VABHS. Her research and professional interests include health psychology and psychology education and training. Dr. Silberbogen currently serves on the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) Board of Directors in the role of Secretary.
